This wiki is not a shoutbox to put your complaints. Also, this is not an official website, do not expect that your suggestions will be taken into account. Please notice that the ressources of the village are limited, so that adding a suggestion here will not ensure that it will be implemented.
To people of the village that might read this page : your place is incredible
Suggestions
Math related
- Ensure that some paper sheets are available (e.g. put a ream of A4 paper available in the library).
- Explain how we can print (if it's possible).
- Write an explicit procedure for people who want to donate books to the library.
Logistics
Broken things
- Provide a way to report when we find that something is broken, and a place to put the broken items that can be moved (e.g. some chairs).
- Currently broken things
- The battery of the clock (that is vertically flipped) above the doors of the library should be changed.
- On the front left corner of the "terrasse lecture room", a lamp is not completely fixed and might eventually fall on people that hang out their laundry.
- The taps in the toilets of the library are clogged up with limestone so that the water gets out with a lot of pressure. They could be unclogged with vinegar.
Terrasse lecture room
- The 4 tree trunks in the middle that support the interior of the roof are too wide, so that students behind them have to contort themselves to see the entire blackboard. Replace them with thin metallic ones (the tree trunks that support the boundary of the roof around the room are nice).
- The last 30 cm at the bottom of the blackboards are not visible to the students that are at the back of the room. Make the blackboard a bit higher.
- The left extremity of the leftmost blackboard is not visible from places that are on front right position (and conversely). Rotate the blackboards at the extremities a bit so that their content can be seen from everywhere in the room (alltogether, the blackboards could form a U, not a straight line).
Map
- Have a map of the place (there is this kroki). Idealy, put it on Openstreetmap, so that people can update it. It's already quite complete on Yandex.
- To construct a map that is more detailed (e.g. to print it), maintain a file in the QGIS format.
- Name or label the streets and the stairs so that newcomers can find their room easily.
Visibility
- Translate the English Wikipedia page (quite complete) to the Turkish one (quite empty but very visited, and its content is reused by basicly everyone). Idealy, translate in other langages too (French will be done soon).
- Upload high quality media content on Commons. It has to be under creative commons licence, best way for people to reuse it.
- There are very cool pictures on the website Gallery, but the licence is not indicated. If the authors are OK, it would be nice if there was a little mention somewhere, like "this is available under licence CC BY-SA 4.0." Then it can be uploaded to Commons.
- Some people are curious of how the village is organized, how decisions are taken, etc... If it's not confidential, could it be explicited somewhere ?
- Some people do not speak Turkish but might still be interested in buying Aziz Nesin books at the store, perhaps sell some english translation of some of the books (or maybe only the most representative in small quantity, i am not sure it will be a commercial success).
Accessibility
- Social interactions are dense in the math village, so that some people might become exhausted. Provide an isolated and calm place so that people can be alone and get some rest. Ensure that this place does not become a chill trendy place to be.
- Most places of the village can only be accessed after taking stairs, which is unpracticable for some disabled people (including those using wheelchair). Build accessible toilets and wheelchair ramps (this might be very expensive though, perhaps start with a few bedrooms close to the main street, the canteen, and a lecture room (e.g. the library)). Ask for advice and feedback to the concerned people.
- Maybe stress out more that the math village aims to be open to everyone, therefore discriminatory behaviors (sexism, racism, ableism, and such) are not welcome. Perhaps, put contact (phone number or place to go) in case of problem ? Little discrete panels here and there could help.
Ecology
Laundry plastic bags
- Quite a lot of blue plastic bags are used a single time. Perhaps replacing them with solid baskets that can be stacked one to another (the initial investment might be big, but the cost could be paid back with the time)
Mosquitos
- Some weeks, there are quite a lot of mosquitos. A way to limit their proliferation is to limit the places where thay can grow:
- Ensure that no plant pots stay filled with water (some metallic pots).
- If you have a permanent pond (like this one), grow fishes or frogs in there so that the larvae get eaten.
Heat
- Some bedrooms are quite hot due to the sun hitting the roofs directly. The shadow made by plants is quite refreshing.
- The village already has an impressive layered plant system (ranging from Virginia creeper to olive and fig trees), but lacks large trees (apart from populus along the main street).
- Growing large trees takes time, and the climate is changing.
- Carob trees (Turkish: keçiboynuzu) might be good candidates (ask specialists for advices).
Parietaria
- Between some stones on the main street, some parietaria (officinalis and/or judaica) are growing. The tiny flowers of this plant are extremely allergenic. Eradicate them.
